Personality & Traits

General Overview “Oh, darling. I am Cardassian - in all the fun ways.” is what Relka will say to anyone who looks at her and thinks she’s a bit too not Cardassian to be Cardassian. Really? And what does a non-Cardassian (as the people who most often pass such comments usually are) know about acting Cardassian? Because she’s seen what that apparently means: be loyal to thy family, look and act a bit shifty, have a silver tongue, be coy with information. Things which she already is, sort of. Maybe growing up on Risa got to her, but she revels in watching people’s brains stop working when she calls out the hypocrisy.

Honestly, though, she's fun to be around and her attitude makes most people feel warm inside. That she approaches her job in a very Cardassian manner (that is, very thoroughly) is a bonus.
Strengths & Weaknesses + thorough
+ unafraid of long, tedious tasks
+ strong advocate for work-life balance

- not very good at listening to her own advice
- prone to the occasional bout of impostor syndrome
- didn't do well in her engineering courses at the Academy; take what you will from that
Ambitions * one day pursue the requisite studies and training to become a doctor
* create a new method of treatment (for what, only time will tell)
* learn how to make souffles.
Hobbies & Interests - people-watching
- playing the Risian flute
- cooking

Personal History Olrud Mor was growing tired of his lack of business - and the government. Cardassians purchased his products, of course, but the bigger market existed beyond the borders of Cardassia - and nobody really wanted to trade with Cardassia, thanks to the stringent merchant laws set by the government and the Obsidian Order.

What did he do then? He and his wife screwed off from Cardassia entirely as she found further education and career development on Risa, which the government had no issues with. There she found training and a job as an APN and he was able to sell to the intergalactic market at scale, operating from within Suraya Bay’s shopping district visited by thousands of intergalactic customers a day. No discrimination, no fuss from anybody, not even the odd Starfleet officer who visited. Olrud and his wife became several times wealthier than they’d ever been, and eventually simply decided to just… stay there and not go home.

Then, in 2383, their daughter Relka was born. She was many things: smart, attractive, studious, witty and, later on in life, very, very good indeed at reading people and guessing at what they needed and what went unsaid. Some of her less open-minded peers in school called it the makings of an intelligence agent - a phrase commonly substituted for spy. Indeed, Relka would probably have made an excellent intelligence officer, had she chosen a darker path forward.

Instead Relka decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps and study medicine, having deduced in her early teens that people didn’t trust Cardassians because they didn’t know Cardassians. Ergo, the first step to dispelling the stereotype was to make her people more visible, not less. So she took up a nursing and hospital management diploma in a polytechnic and interned in local hospitals.

Then, in 2400, in her final year of school, Starfleet came to her polytechnic and set up a recruitment booth. Lured by the promise of not only being able to use it to provide great representation to her people but also practise what she’d been learning, she was more than happy to speak with them on a possible career - and watch with amusement as the recruitment officers struggled to process that she was well qualified and a citizen but also Cardassian. Nonetheless, she was granted an interview and, after some time, allowed to take the entrance exam just like any other prospective cadet - which she then proceeded to pass like any other sufficiently qualified, sufficiently prepared cadet, silencing their trepidations.

Relka was a model cadet. Not always top of her classes but hardworking, willing to learn and, ideal for a Starfleet nurse, very good at getting her patients to calm down. She graduated successfully in 2404 and was initially assigned to the USS Monterey Bay.
