Mission:
VFY S6, E1: It Has Begun
Location: Location: USS Tianlong, Bridge
Location: USS Tianlong, bridge
The USS Tianlong was conducting battle simulations when Shawn heard from the tactical officer. “What is it, Lieutenant Goodman?” Shawn asked. As looked over to Kyle. He expected to hear from the fleet. He knew the 2nd Battle Group was engaging the Klingons. He was annoyed by this, because he felt that she should assist. But they had their orders to conduct battle drills and hold down the fort in the Vilmor II System.
“Long range sensors are detecting a wave of Gorn ships on an intercept course with our position.” Kyle called out, as he looked over to Shawn and Toby. Toby had let Shawn conduct the battle simulation exercise since it was supposed to simulate what would happen if you lost your CO. But the time for simulations was over. Everyone looked at Toby. To see how he would guide them into the upcoming battle. Everyone suspected the Gorn would attack soon.
“It seems they have decided to engage us now.” Toby said, concern in his voice. . “Raise shields and prepare weapons.” He looked too Shawn. “Have our fighters go into attack formation.” His eyes went to Shawn’s and he looked around the bridge. “We have done our drills and prepared for this.” Toby was concerned for their people away from them during the drills, they needed to return now.
“Aye Commodore, Intiating the recall order now.” Shawn said, worried about his fighters being exposed. Luckily for them, the Gorn were still warping in. He wondered why they chose now to strike? Especially after being subjected by the Klingon Empire on a couple of years back.
“Lieutenant Goodman, have you tried to hail the Gorn?” Shawn asked, hoping that the Gorn would be willing to listen to reason. Hopefully they could see this was a bad idea.
“I have tried several times, commander, they are ignoring our hails.” Kyle said, thinking to himself. This is it. War was coming their way. Kyle was nervous, but ready to carry out his duties.
“Commodore, I recommend we go into a fleet information.” Shawn said, hating the radio silence coming from the Gorn warships. Shawn was hoping for a dialogue. But that did not appear to be the case at all.
“Make it so, Number one.” Toby replied. He stood, looking out the viewscreen and spoke. “Commander, have a message sent to the fleet yards, advising them of our current situation.”
Toby wondered if there were other attacks going on elsewhere. He knew they were all trained well but he couldn’t help but have concern for others.
“The message is sent.” Shawn said. The message was short and to the point. It notified Admiral Martinez that the First Battle Group was attempting to make contact with the Gorn Hegemony and they were on an attack approach.
“How long til they arrive?” Shawn asked as he looked over to Kyle. He had a feeling it would be a matter of hours. He was really in for a surprise, they only had minutes.
“15 minutes, they somehow were able to mask their approach til now.” Kyle said, curious how they were able to do that?
“They have found a way to hide.” Toby spoke up. “Inform our squadrons of this as well as command.” He looked around the bridge and his eyes landed on Meghan. “Lieutenant Richards, see if you can find out anything about the Gorn technology that masks energy signatures.”
Toby turned to Shawn. “Thoughts? Could they be sharing technology with the Klingons and working together? It would be a sound tactical move.” Toby said, you would have never guessed that the Gorn Empire would openly held the Klingons especially after being subjugated by them in loosing to them in a pretty ugly War.
He'll be assumed the reason to go and join them had to be because the Klingons were right, the hege of money had been infiltrated, not by the founders but have by another species known as the Undine or more commonly referred to as species 8472.
Meghan was just as shocked as the rest of the bridge crew on the USS Tianlong. She would have never guessed the Gorn Hegemony would openly join the Klingon Empire, but apparently they were not the only species to do so.
“Commodore Carlsson, the Gorn are altering course they are setting a course for Nausicaa.” Kyle called out, as he watched the Gorn altering their course on his longe range tactical sensors. They were now withdrawing from the battle. This made very little sense to Kyle and the rest of the senior staff.
“Are they staging?” Shawn asked, trying to grasp what the Gorn were really upto? Before he could get a response, the klaxons went off again. “Commodore, now we are reading power signatures consist with the Gorn near Genton IX.” This was in neutral space. What where they upto, Shawn wondered.
“We hold our position.” Toby replied. “Keep us at Red Alert and let’s see how this plays out. We have no reason to react in any way.” He looked to Shawn. “They want something from us, either a reaction or to test us.”
Shawn I heard what Toby had said, he thought about it for a moment before responding. “I think it's the latter,, they're testing our limits if you ask me it's what I would do in the situation.” Shawn said as he looked to Toby.
Then Shawn proceeded to head over towards the Tactical display. “First they head towards the border, and then fall back at Nausicaa a second group is now seen over in neutral space. If we have one more siding let them being at another part of the border this is just proved my point that they're testing us, I do feel that attack is imminent they're going to wait for us to let our guard down.”
“Which we won’t.” Toby replied, then continued. “Though we might let them think we have.” His eyes met Shawn’s wi th determination. “I would rather avoid a conflict but if they want to bring a fight to us, we will show them what we are made of.”
“We're not going to start this fight but we'll finish it.” Shawn said with a big boastful smile on his face. He truly believe the klingons had no idea what they were getting themselves into if they continued upon this path.
“Now we're getting more proximity sensors near the border, Commodore.” Kyle called out from tactical station. It was clear to him that the Gorn were testing them. The Gorn we're going as close to the corner as possible.
“How long do they plan on keeping this up?” Rachel asked, part of her was nervous but another part of her was annoyed. If they were going to attack, they needed to do so.
“Commodore I recommend we recall Delta squadron, I'm feeling we're going to need them soon.” Kyle suggested to Toby. The Gorn were reminding him of vultures.
“I agree.” Toby said after a moment. “Have them get here quickly.” He didn’t want to have to fight, it would be better to have a peaceful end to this but his gut instinct and the facts at hand told him they were headed for a battle.
Shawn walked over to Kyle but by the time you got there he could tell that Kyle was already recalling the fighters. Shawn decided to help over at the Tactical station for the moment, he wanted to take a look at the long range sensors.
“Delta Squadron has acknowledged the signal, they're heading back.” Kyle said, he waited until he got confirmation from the squadron commander in order to inform the Commodore.
“Commodore Carlsson I'm detecting a large fleet heading this way, one command carrier, three cruisers, six destroyers and two escorts.”
Shawn thought this would be a good time to launch beta and gamma squadrons. The call was enough to him, but if it was he would have definitely done that. He was tired of the games. Part of him kind of wished that the Gorn would just attack and get it over with but it was clear to him that they were testing the borders. Unlike they're playing on counterparts they like to play head games.
“Number One.” Toby said as he looked to Shawn. “Let’s launch beta and gamma squadrons. It may be a part of their plan but they need to know we won’t just sit here. We need them to understand we are ready for a fight.
Toby hated this waiting game but it was one of the standards they lived by. The enemy engaged first.
“Here they come.” Meghan called out, has she noticed they cross from Klingon territory into Federation space.
“Mr Goodman, signal the fleet advising to withdraw immediately.” Shawn called out. He was trying to give the Gorn an opportunity to withdraw before things got to the point of no return.
“No response Commander. The Gorn will be a weapons range in 30 seconds.” Kyle said as he looked to Toby. The entire Bridge staff was looking to Toby to see what would happen next.
“Send them a message warning them they are in Federation space.” Toby said as a precaution to Layla.
“Power weapons.” Toby called out. “Return fire if they engage us.” He looked to Shawn. “Order our squadrons to respond in kind to any and all engagement.” He watched the viewscreen, he had a feeling this was no longer a test.
The Gorn ships entered Federation space, and as ordered, Kyle had fired a warning shot across their bow which did not seem to display the Gorn at all. They were with seconds of opening fire.
“Remember your training, we'll get through this.” Shawn called out, as he waited for Toby to give the order.
Toby didn’t hesitate. The Gorn’s weapons were charged and they were preparing to fire. “Fire weapons, concentrate on taking out their shields and weapons.” He hated doing this but they had no choice. They had warned them but the Gorn were here for a fight.
“Incoming.” Called out Shawn as he washed the two destroyers start coming towards the USS Tianlong. Other shipts in the fleet started to lock onto their weapons and also open fire. A weapons barrage of fire coming from both sides filled up the night sky.
Toby walked back and forth across the bridge. There was nothing but a constant firing of weapons. “Damage Report!” Toby demanded. “How are our squadrons holding up!”
“Squadrons are pulling the destroyers off us, they are holding their own. Their command cruiser is trying to flank us.” Kyle called out, as he continued to monitor his station.
Meghan continued her scans. “Shields are barely dented, Commodore. 97% and holding. All personnel are at their battle stations.” She said, thinking so far, they were holding their own.
“Lieutenant Goodman.” Toby turned to helm. “Take evasive actions.” He then turned to tactical. “Concentrate on their command cruiser. We need to take out their weapons.” He turned to Shawn. “This is the test right here, to see if we turn tail and run.”
Toby pressed the comm. “Medical have we sustained any injuries?” He hoped they came through this unscathed but it wasn’t likely.
“Minor injuries only.” Logan replied. “I will update you when I can.” He said quickly. “We are a little busy down here.” He didn’t want to cut him off but he was honest if nothing else.
“I’ll let you get back to work.” Toby said. He knew the doctor wasn’t being rude just stating the facts. “Good enough Toby said and then turned to science. “Report Mr. Forbes.”
“I don’t believe they are going to disable us.” Chris spoke up from his station. “They are not concentrating on essential areas only firing to create a light conflict with us” He hoped he was right. “Either that are they are waiting for others to arrive. I am keeping my eyes out for any signatures in the area that are questionable.”
“Starfleet shields are tough, they could be trying to wear us down first.” Shawn said, as he looked over to Chris. He wanted him to see that the Gorn were just starting. He knew deep in his gut, they were only starting their assault.
“Continuing to target lead ships, but Commodore I recommend we pull back and allow some of our cruisers to engage these destroyers.” Kyle suggested, as another round of weapons barrage impacted the USS Tianlong.
Toby listened to them speak before he said a word. “Agreed Mr. Goodman, let’s give them something else to battle with.”
“Number one.” Toby turned to Shawn. “Inform our squadrons we are pulling back and to have cruisers move In.” There was no sense in taking unnecssary chances with the command ship.
“Helm.” He spoke to Layla. “Move us away from the battle but within distance we can engage again if necessary.”
“Yes Sir.” Layla said and proceeded to move them out of the line of fire. She also thought she was a good move. She would keep an eye on the battle just as everyone else did.
“Lieutenant Forbes.” Toby spoke up. “Keep scanning for heat signatures and other ships in the area. He then turned back to Shawn. “Give me your thoughts.” A good command officer relied on his first officer.
“I believe the Gorn are testing our limits.” Shawn simply stated. He knew how dangerous the Gorn where.
Kyle continue to lay weapons fire down until they were out of the primary range of the two destroyers. “Delta Squadron still a few minutes out.” He said l, wishing they would hurry up and arrive.
“They will get here.” Toby said with confidence. “They have a plan and soon we will know what it is. I believe you are right, we are being tested but I feel like they are toying with us for something bigger.”
“Let's get our destroyers in, let's see if we can get them on the defensive a little.” Kyle suggested to his commanding officer. He was tired of being on defense.
Toby smiled at Kyle and then looked to Shawn. “Let’s go with this tactic and see what they do when they are the one having to defend themselves.”
“Re-deploying the two destroyers now.” Kyle said defiant class shifts open fire on the Gorn vessels. The gorn ships started to buckle under the constant pressure of weapons fire from the two defiant class starships.
“Keep your guard up.” Toby warned his bridge crew. “Just because we are gaining ground doesn’t mean they don’t have a surprise out there. If there is anything, even in the slightest let me know.”
“So they're starting to Target the USS Osaka.” Kyle is said as the enemy shift tactics seem to be take out one ship at a time. Unfortunately for them they chose the ship that had very strong shields and an ablative hull armor.
“Have Alpha Squadron pullback to protect the Osaka.” Shawn called out, as the USS Osaka started to open up and pound down volleys of weapons fire. There firepower along with Alpha squadrons fire power had the lead Gorn vessel started to rock hard under the weapons barrage. You could easily see the power fluctuations bouncing off of each shot on the going vessel. Within a matter of seconds the shifts power systems were severely depleted and the Gorn were struggling just to hold their position.
“Hail the Gorn ship again.” Toby ordered. “And continue to fire. We need to hold our ground and not give an inch.” He looked to Shawn. “I doubt they will surrender.”
Kyle tried three times, without any success. “They are not answering our hails, Commodore.” Kyle called out, as waited for his next set of orders.
“We have no choice.” Toby replied. “We will continue to defend ourselves.” He looked to Shawn. “Have alpha squadron continue to fire until they cease their attack or their disabled.”
“Aye Commodore.” Kyle said, as he sent the message for alpha squadron to continue their attack against the gorn forces. Within a matter of minutes the lead ships were taking a lot of weapons fire.
“Lead ships are withdrawing.” Kyle called out, but noticing the fleet was not withdrawing yet. Kyle looked to see what Toby was going to do in response.
“We continue to engage any ships that fire upon us.” Toby ordered. “I want fighters tracking those lead ships in case they change their mind.
