2376: [Star Trek Hidden Frontier: S1, E1: Enemy Unknown, Part 2] 18 months later… The USS Excelsior NCC-2000-B is being posted to Deep Space 12. She is a galaxy class dreadnought. The command of the Excelsior falls to Captain Ian Quincy Knapp; he believes the crew is too inexperienced for this type of command. He assumes command of the Sector from his old friend Jennifer Cole. Captain Knapp tells Captain Cole that there has been unconfirmed reports of unusual alien activity, possibly same aliens that he faced at during “The Battle of Lapolis.” There could be a connection between the two incidents. They want Captain Knapp to take out the USS Excelsior-B and investigate the situation. Captain Cole feels that Captain Knapp is jumping back into the nightmare, and he tells her that he always believes in facing his fears. Jennifer gives him command of the station, she is being re assigned to the USS Las Angles. Captain Knapp meets his new first officer, a person he calls a kid. And Commander Munoz is a little offended. He wants a chance to prove his worth. He orders Commander Munoz to the USS Excelsior to get familiar with the ship and the crew and to earn their trust. Captain Knapp wants to meet their new mysterious crewmember known as Rayvan , some believe he is a herald for the Iconians. Captain Knapp is skeptical of him. Rayvan was given a task by Captain Knapp to investigate the system they are going too. Rayvan tells him the sector of space is controlled by the Gray Confederacy, they are a collection of genetically engineered species, run by a power pysonic race known as the Etherials. Rayvan tells Captain Knapp that they were mortal enemies of the Iconians. And they were responsible in part of the loss of the Iconian Empire over 200,000 years ago. He goes on to say that the Grey Confederacy are a xenophobic and lusive race that only come out of hiding when attacking a civilization or when to abduct an individual or a species. Rayvan warns the Federation that if the Grey have come out of hiding and abducting races, there may be no stopping them. Even the Iconians could not stop them. Captain Knapp is a little arrogant and believes they will be able to find a way to stop the Grey Confederacy. Rayvan tells him that the Iconians over 200,000 years ago were more advance than the Federation or any race that exists. Captain Knapp tells him that they defeated the Borg and the Dominion. He feels they can defeat the Grey Confederacy too. Rayvan tells the Ecxcelsior crew that the Grey may have a potential weakness. If they leave the McAlister Nebula or the Briar Patch they will be vulnerable to conventional weapons. Rayvan tells them the Etherials use a bio mechanical hull plating which is indestructible when fused with the natural elements of metaphasic particles. Both the Nebula and the Briar Patch provide the Grey Confederacy high concentrations of the particles. Captain Knapp takes Rayvan's suggestion to heart, and wants to exploit their vulnerability. Captain Knapp wants to work on ways of pulling out the Grey Confederacy out of the briar patch or the McAlsister Nebula, and hopefully get them to talk, to open a peaceful dialogue with the Etherials. Rayvan feels its a waste of time, the Grey Confederacy does not negotiate with outsiders. He believes they do what they want, and they take what they want. Captain Knapp tells him they need to be able to help them order their surrender, Rayvan thinks its foolish for the captain to try. He makes his objections clear. He also orders Rayvan to give Doctor Heglaar all the information he has on all the species that makes up the Grey Confederation. Apparently the Galaxy Class Dreadnought’s Ecelsior was integrated with bio neural gel packs. Made popular by the USS Voyager. The ship is struggling to accept the gel packs. The New Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Robin Lefner, reports to the first officer that the ship will be ready after they replace the gel pack. Then the Assitant Chief Engineer tried to hit on Commander Lefner, she let him down easily. Doctor Henglaar chats with Commander Elbrey in his office, when the first officer stops by they have a nice conversation in Doctor Henglaar’s office. Commander Munoz continues his rounds and meets up with Ensign Jenna McFarland. She was getting familiar with the new science Ensign Ro Nevin. Lieutenant William Martinez meets the new first officer, and they discuss weapons systems and they talk about preperations on how to contend with hostile forces attempting to invade the Excelsior-B. The first officer then goes over to Ensign Rawlins the new communications officer, who is also on the bridge. Then he talks with the new Chief Operations Officer Ensign Andrew Barrett. Then the Captain walks onto the bridge. Lieutenant Martinez calls the bridge crew to attention, the captain is on deck. Munoz asks if the captain wants a tour, Captain Knapp informs him no time and to follow him to his ready room. Captain Knapp tells him that there was an attack on a colony ship all hands lost in the Corentha System. It’s near the Briarpatch. Knapp wants to know what they are upto, he believes its the Grey and he fears they may not be able to stop them. [Star Trek Hidden Frontier: S1, E1: Enemy Unknown, Part 3] Commander Munoz reports to Captain Knapp that the Devron System is 2.1 par sects from the Briar Patch. Captain Knapp tells him that he is assembling a task force to the Devron System, and the Excelsior-B will lead the mission, by serving as bait, and trying to initiate contact with them. If not successful, the fleet will warp in, and attempt to disable them. If they must, destroy them. The USS Excelsior prepares to leave Deep Space 12. They set a course for the Devron System. Rayvan was asked by Captain Knapp why the Grey attacked the Iconians. He does not know why, he just knows they have been fighting for a long time. Captain Knapp learns this in a meeting he has with Rayvan. The senior staff discuss why the Grey are coming after the Federation. Rayvan explains the federation is like an ant to them, a potential resource to exploit. He is not sure why the Grey want the Federation, but clearly they do. Rayvan and Counselor Elbrey believe if they can isolate a Grey, they can disconnect them from the pysonic control, and potentially communicate with them. Rayvan explains that the Grey have their own version of a hive mind, and the background noise that disables anyone that hears it, is that Hive Mind. They are working on a way to counter that noise from affecting the crew. Ensign McFarland gets on the comms and tells Captain Knapp they are entering the Devron System. He tells her they are on their way. He dismisses his senior staff. The fleet has jumped into the Devron System, as Captain Knapp and senior staff report to the bridge. Captain Knapp asks Commander Lefner if their plan is ready, she tells him it is. And she reports key area of the ship will be protected by force shields to prevent pysonic attack, but the bridge needs to be vulnerable, so Lieutenant Witczak and her have created emitters to prevent the pysonic attack. Captain Knapp tells Lefner to release drive plasma, making them a very tempting target. The ship shuts down most of its power systems, and starts to drift. The trap is set. Captain Knapp orders them to send out a fake distress call. Lefner in Engineering talks to Witczak about how erry it is to be on a ship that is powered down. Witczak tries to tell her that it reminds him of his days at the academy. He use to work old relay stations. He got use to the darkness, she tells him she never had to do that on the Excalibur when she was on the graveyard shift. They are both fleet brats. The Gray appear, and prepare their trap. All areas of the ship but the bridge are sealed with forcefields. Captain Knapp attempts to communicate with the Grey infiltrator. The Grey Battleship opens fire. Counselor Elbrey tells Captain Knapp this is an engineered foot soldier with no emotions. The Task Force is called in, and Captain Knapp orders them to opens fire. He wants the ship disabled not destroyed. There theory was correct, the Grey Battleship is vulnerable to weapons fire outside the nebula and briar patch. The Battleship makes a run for the briar patch. Captain Knapp tries to save the USS Katana by extending his shields but it's too late, they are under the control of the Grey. His first officer says it's not tactically sound to risk the fleet to save one ship. Captain Knapp reminds Commander Munoz that they are collecting as much information as they can on the Grey. Counselor Elbrey in sickbay manages to make contact with the solider, they need their energy and resources, but it does not know why. The solider wants to be returned to its people. Captain Knapp asks the counselor how do they rescue you're people. The solider says they are all going to die, if he is not released. The Grey leaves briar patch, making them vulnerable again, Captain Knapp orders the fleet to attack, as he does the Grey figure out that the USS Excelsior-B is the flagship and they go after them. The fleet engages and the Grey attempt to capture the Excelsior-B. Captain Knapp is ready to leave the area, they got what they came for. The Gray lock a tractor beam on them. The Gray managed to lower the shields and beam off Captain Knapp, the Excelsior-B manages to get the shields back online, Commander Munoz assumes command and demands they find away to get their captain back. He tells Rawlins to notify the task force of the situation and to transfer fleet command ito Captain T’Kel. The crew come up with a plan to block the pysonic attack, they discover the Grey have a window in their shields to carry out their pysonic attacks. Doctor Henglaar, Counselor Elbrey and Lieutenant Witczak work on a plan to great a device to block their signals. Captain Knapp is on the enemy ship talking to the Grey, asking why have they done this? He wants to know why the hostilities. A yellow hooded silhouette says to him. They need their life force energy. Captain Knapp tells him the Federation will now allow you to kill other life forms to steal their life force. Commander Munoz is ordered by his captain who is under the control of the Grey to order the task force to surrender, they transmit it in the clear to show the Grey they are complying. But it's a trick, and Captain T’Kell has no intention of surrendering the fleet. The Excelsior-B manages to use their device, and beam the captain back, as the fleet jumps in to help the Excelsior. The Grey flee, and Captain Knapp orders them to leave. And not pursue the Grey. They got what they came for. This Operation was later called “Operation Devron.” In the next scene we have Counselor Elbrey asking for Mister Scott to jump up onto her lap. It is a dog. Captain Knapp wants to tell Elbrey about his encounter with the Grey. Captain Knapp tells her that he is having nightmares, but believes they are not just nightmares anymore. He thinks its some sort of signal, a back wash. Not suppose be there, but it is. He starts to tell her about a dyson sphere, and he is not sure why. He thinks they may live in a dyson sphere. They have 1,000 battleships patrolling one of those dyson sphere. Captain Knapp thinks the sun in the dyson sphere is dying. Lieutenant Witczak meets up with Commander Lefner in the lounge and tells her that he has completed replacing all damaged gel packs. She tells him good work. He apologizes to her, and she says its okay and then she says it's cute, but then he hits on her again. Asking her if there is a chance. She tells him that anything can happen. Just dont count on it, she tells him. They toast as the story ends.

Hidden Frontier’s Continuity Errors Explained

The USS Excelsior-B in the Kriss Universe has always been NCC-2000-B. In Hidden Frontiers the USS Excelsior a fan made series had a registry of NCC-77246.

Ro Nevin declares that Ro Laren is his sister in this fan made series. For our purposes we will adapt it in our canon universe.

There is no proof other than this fan made series which is not licensee material for Star Trek that the Iconian’s were around. According to the fan series Rayvan was an Iconian, I am going to allow him to be part of the story as a Herald to the Iconian's. They are trying to warn the Federation. And they are not all gone, apparently.

Hidden Frontier’s Important Crew Facts in Episode 2

Ensign Jenna McFarland was previously assigned to the USS Olympus. She talks about Commander Johns convincing her to come to the USS Excelsior-B. Commander Munoz asks her about Corey Aster, she tells him that he is okay. Does not give any further insight. Jenna tells Commander Munoz that Brooke Meyer is out on leave because he got into an altercation with a nausiccaan.

After Commander Munoz leaves Jenna tells Nevin that she dumped two pounds of gagh in Boothby’s pound and how surprised Boothby was over this prank. She replaced his Koi fish with jumping Gagh.

Whats unclear to me is why is Jenna an Ensign and Munoz is a Lieutenant Commander and first officer? They both went to the academy together, according to this episode.

Ensign Ro Nevin, Ensign Brad Rawlins and Ensign Andrew Barrett all went to the academy together. We learn this is Ensign Brad Rawlins second posting his first was at Starfleet Command under Admiral V’Akk. The Admiral recommended Rawlins to the Excelsior-B.

We learn that Ensign Andrew Barrett had a couple of minor infractions at the academy, but since then has a spotless record. Commander Munoz tells him to keep it that way and they will get along just fine.

Ensign Cappell was injured again and Henglaar did not want to deal with it so he ordered Doctor Anderson, a female doctor to tend to Cappell’s injury.
