604 words; about a 3 minute read

Alexander picked up the commbadge from his bedside table and attached it to his flight suit. However, he didn’t attach it to his chest but rather the sleeve just below the elbow. On the left chest of his flight suit was a black leather patch with a pair of gold wings printed on it and underneath his rank, surname and callsign.

He checked his appearance in the mirror once more. ‘This is it.’ He told himself silently. ‘You’ve made it. You are now Commander Air Group. This is where you’ve wanted to end up since you applied to the Academy.’

As satisfied as he was with what he’d achieved in his fifteen-year career, he didn’t want this to be the pinnacle of his career either. So, what would come next? An Executive Officer billet four or five years down the line? Eventual command of a starship? Then what? Promotion to Admiral? That final possibility didn’t appeal to him. Alexander was no desk jockey.

With his promotion to CAG, Xander had reached a fork in his career and at some point in the next few years he would have to decide where he went from here. But for now he needed to focus on his new assignment.

With one last check to make sure he was happy with his appearance, Xander strode out of his quarters. Chief Wilson had been in touch a few minutes before to let the CAG know that the 714th’s briefing room and the offices for the CAG and Wing Commander were on Deck 80. Alexander had already put a request in to the station’s Quartermaster for new quarters on or near Deck 80. He preferred to live near his fighter.

When Alexander entered his new office Wilson was already waiting and eager to complain. “The Flight Decks are a mess.” He announced. “The organisation is piss poor.”

The 714th Tactical Aerospace Group was made up of two Wings; the 7th and 14th Tactical Aerospace Wings. Each Wing consisted of two squadrons of 24. The 7th Wing was assigned to the station itself while the 14th was stationed at a Starfleet Base on the planet below. Shuttlebay’s Seven and Eight of Port Royale had been assigned for use as the home of the 7th Wing.

“Calm down, Hank,” Xander replied. “The 714th is a newly formed unit. Most of them only just arrived ahead of us. But together with the Wing Commanders, we can mould this unit into the effective fighting force it needs to be. That’s why I brought you. I need someone I trust to run my flight decks.”

He walked around his desk and sat in the chair. “Now, I need to arrange a meeting with my Wing Commanders and you and I will need to travel to our base on the planet at the earliest opportunity. I want to see how things are going down there.”

Hank nodded and let out a sigh. “Well I’ll leave you to it. I’m going to crack some heads and start to get these flight decks into shape. Later CAG.”

“See ya.” There was a lot of work ahead of them but Xander had a clear plan in his mind. Besides, given the tensions in the region Port Royale needed the 714th operating at peak efficiency. He was going to work his ass off to make sure that the 714th was the best Tactical Aerospace Group in the fleet.
