Mission:
VFY S6, E1: It Has Begun
Location: USS Valkyrie, Various
Commodore Tenora Tal stood on the bridge of the USS Valkyrie, her expression a mixture of determination and concern. The recent news of the USS Tianlong's disappearance weighed heavily on her mind, a dark cloud looming over her crew. They had last been reported in the Archanis system, a region now fraught with uncertainty and danger.
“Ensign Vanora,” she said, her voice steady despite the storm of emotions inside her, “please clear my schedule. Finding the Tianlong is our top priority.”
“Yes, Commodore,” replied Ensign Kari Vanora, her yeoman, swiftly jotting down orders on her PADD. The young officer could see the strain on Tenora’s face and felt a pang of sympathy for her commanding officer. The disappearance of the Tianlong wasn’t just a mission; it was personal.
After a moment, Tenora approached her first officer, Commander Lauren Ballantine, who was poring over the latest reports. “Lauren,” she began, “I can’t shake the feeling that something terrible has happened to the Tianlong and her crew. What do you think?”
“I share your concerns, Commodore,” Lauren replied, her brow furrowed. “It’s unsettling that they’ve gone dark. But I refuse to believe they’re gone without a trace. We need to explore all possible scenarios and routes.”
As they spoke, Lieutenant Junior Grade Odan Talmar, the deputy Vice Commander of the Air Group, stepped forward. “Ma’am, my fighter unit is ready for launch. There are still ships in the area, but they’re holding tight. The Gorn are conducting their own scans of the rift, which complicates things.”
Tenora nodded, appreciating Odan’s motivation but knowing they needed to assess the situation first. “Thank you, Odan. Let’s hold off on launching for now. I need to get a better understanding of what’s happening out there.”
Lieutenant Junior Grade Nicole Stanley, the helmsman, looked up from her console, concern etched on her face. “Commodore, I could push the engines to maximum warp, but it might damage them. Otherwise, we can maintain our speed at warp 9 and arrive in about six hours.”
“Let’s keep our current speed,” Tenora decided. “I don’t want to risk the ship’s integrity right now.”
The security chief, Lieutenant Junior Grade Calum Tate, chimed in. “While we’re not on alert, I’ll keep my team vigilant. I’ll arrange a wide sweep of the area to ensure we’re prepared for any potential threats.”
“Good call, Calum,” Tenora replied. “We need to be ready for anything.”
Lieutenant Junior Grade Carson Goldberg, the chief medical officer, interjected with a serious tone. “If the Tianlong is out there, potentially damaged, we should prepare for casualties. I recommend we have medical teams on standby.”
“Agreed,” Tenora said, her heart heavy with the weight of the unknown. “We’ll hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I’m counting on all of you.”
Hannah Young, the chief operations officer, added her voice to the mix. “Commodore, my team is ready, but I can’t help but wonder what happened to them. Did they make it through the rift?”
“We're not sure Lieutenant, right now it's not the best time for speculation. I am just as concerned as you are though. Right now let's focus on how we can help them. She said as she looked over to Calum.
Tenora turned her attention back to Calum. “Calum, prepare some battle simulations. We need to be ready for any encounters with the Klingons or the Gorn.”
“On it, Commodore,” Calum acknowledged, already considering the tactical implications of their situation.
Lieutenant Steven Bentley, the ship’s intelligence officer, leaned forward, adjusting his glasses. “I’ve been checking my contacts, but it’s eerily quiet. No rumors at all about the Tianlong. However, I did catch wind that several Gorn ships are also unaccounted for.”
Tenora’s expression darkened. “That’s troubling. The Gorn have shown interest in this area before. Any insight into why they might have targeted the Tianlong?”
“The Klingons have long considered the Archanis system sacred,” Steven explained. “With the Federation already established there, tensions have been rising.”
“Let’s remain vigilant,” Tenora ordered, her mind racing with possibilities. “Ensign Morgan, do we have any other ships nearby—Federation, Gorn, or Klingon?”
“No other Federation ships in the immediate area, Commodore,” Tina Morgan replied. “But I can’t confirm if any Klingon vessels are lurking nearby.”
Turning to her Chief Science Officer, Ensign Ramiro Salazar, Tenora said, “Ensign Salazar, I need you to analyze our sensor data. Can you find a way to stabilize the rift?”
“I’ll need about six hours, ma’am,” Ramiro replied, a hint of apprehension in his voice. “It’s not an easy task.”
Hannah quickly offered her assistance. “I can help with that, Ensign.”
“Good,” Tenora said, feeling a spark of hope. “Also, Commander Ballantine, I’d like you to lend your expertise to this effort.”
“Of course, Commodore,” Lauren replied, her resolve firm. “We’ll work together to come up with a viable solution.”
As they gathered around the science station, Ramiro began outlining their options. “We could manipulate the rift’s energy signatures to create a stable entry point. It’s risky, but it may work.”
“What if we recalibrate the deflector array to emit a focused beam?” Hannah suggested. “It might help stabilize the rift temporarily.”
“That could work,” Lauren agreed. “We’ll need to conduct tests to determine the most effective frequency.”
The three of them dived deeper into their discussion, their voices a blend of urgency and determination. With each passing minute, the weight of their mission pressed heavier on Tenora’s shoulders, but her faith in her crew remained unshaken.
“If we can find the right harmonic resonance, it just might be enough to stabilize it long enough for us to get through,” Ramiro said, eyes bright with the thrill of possibility.
“Let’s run simulations on that,” Hannah suggested. “If we can model the rift’s energy fluctuations, we can adjust our approach.”
“We need to work fast,” Lauren urged. “Time is of the essence, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the Tianlong’s fate.”
As they collaborated, Tenora watched with a sense of pride. Her crew was focused, determined, and ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Together, they would do everything possible to uncover the truth about the USS Tianlong and bring her crew home.
In the silence that followed, Tenora took a deep breath, her heart steeling against the unknown. Whatever awaited them in the depths of the rift, she knew they would face it together, united by their commitment to each other and the ideals of Starfleet. The echoes of the past would not define them; rather, they would carve their own path forward, no matter the cost.
Location USS Valkyrie Bridge
6 hours later…
Six hours had passed since the USS Valkyrie had set course for the Archanis system. The crew was tense, their minds occupied with the uncertainty surrounding the USS Tianlong. As they emerged from warp, the ship transitioned into orbit around the planet, revealing a chaotic scene below.
“Entering orbit now, Commodore,” Lieutenant Junior Grade Nicole Stanley announced, her eyes focused on the viewscreen. “Detecting multiple ships in the vicinity, but the situation looks dire.”
Tenora leaned closer, her heart racing. “What do you see, Lieutenant?”
Nicole’s fingers danced over her console as she processed the data. “The rift appears to be fluctuating again. Federation ships are withdrawing safely, but… oh no! The Gorn vessels are being caught in its effects.”
The viewscreen flickered to life, showing the chaotic dance of the rift as it pulsated violently. In the distance, several Gorn ships were engulfed in the rift’s instability, their hulls buckling under the strain until they were torn apart in a brilliant flash of light.
“By the stars…” Odan breathed, his face pale as he watched the destruction unfold.
“Commodore, we need to act quickly!” Calum Tate, the security chief, urged. “We can’t just stand by while they’re caught in that.”
“Agreed,” Tenora replied, her eyes scanning the chaotic scene. “We’ll do what we can to assist. Lieutenant Bentley, are you getting any distress signals from the Gorn?”
Steven Bentley shook his head, frustration evident. “Nothing coherent. It’s like they’re completely cut off from communications. They must be overwhelmed by the rift’s fluctuations.”
“Then we need to focus on getting our crew out of here,” Tenora decided. “Helm, prepare to move us closer to the rift’s edge. We’ll be ready to assist anyone we can.”
As the Valkyrie maneuvered into position, the crew watched in a mix of horror and urgency. Suddenly, a flicker of movement caught Tenora’s eye.
“Wait! What’s that?” she exclaimed, pointing toward the rift.
The viewscreen zoomed in, revealing a battered silhouette emerging from the chaotic rift. The ship was unmistakable.
“It’s the USS Tianlong!” Odan shouted, a mix of disbelief and relief flooding his voice.
“On screen!” Tenora commanded, her heart racing.
The image of the Tianlong filled the screen. The ship bore signs of battle damage—scorched hull plating and a flickering array of lights—but it was intact.
“Can we establish communications?” Tenora asked, her voice trembling with hope.
“Trying now, ma’am,” Nicole replied, her fingers flying over the controls. After a moment, a crackling voice came through the speakers.
“This is Commodore Toby Carlsson of the USS Tianlong. We’ve emerged from the rift… but we need assistance. Our systems are failing, and we have injured crew members on board.”
“Commodore Carlsson, this is Commodore Tenora Tal of the USS Valkyrie. We’re here to help. Can you assess your damage?”
“There’s structural damage to the aft section, and our warp drive is offline. We’re losing power. We need to evacuate the injured before we can make repairs,” Toby responded, his voice strained but resolute.
“Understood. We’re sending a shuttle to assist,” Tenora said. “Lieutenant Goldberg, prepare a medical team for immediate deployment. We’ll need to stabilize their crew before they can return to the ship.”
Carson nodded, already coordinating the medical evacuation. “I’ll have the team ready within minutes, Commodore.”
“Nicole, can you keep our shields up while we extend support?” Tenora asked.
“Absolutely, ma’am. I’ll make sure we’re protected,” Nicole replied, her confidence evident.
As the shuttle was prepped for launch, the tension in the air was palpable. The crew of the Valkyrie was focused on their mission, every second counting as they approached the beleaguered Tianlong.
“Shuttle is ready to deploy!” Nicole announced, her voice steady.
“Launch the shuttle,” Tenora commanded.
The shuttle launched gracefully from the Valkyrie, heading toward the damaged ship. Inside, Calum and the medical team prepared themselves for what awaited them.
“Let’s make sure we’re ready for anything,” Calum said, his tone serious. “We don’t know what we’ll find on board.”
As they approached the Tianlong, the shuttle’s sensors picked up the extent of the damage. “Shields are fluctuating,” the pilot reported. “We need to be careful.”
“Hold steady,” Calum instructed. “We’ll board through the aft airlock. Medical team, prepare to disembark.”
The shuttle docked with a hiss, and the hatch opened to reveal a dimly lit corridor. The air was heavy with the smell of burnt metal and smoke.
“Let’s move!” Calum said, leading the charge, followed closely by the medical team.
Inside the ship, the crew of the Tianlong was in disarray. Injured personnel were scattered across the deck, and the lights flickered ominously. Commodore Carlsson met them at the entrance, his uniform singed and his expression strained.
“Thank you for coming,” he said, his voice filled with relief. “We’ve lost power and need assistance stabilizing the ship and treating the injured.”
“Let’s get to work,” Calum replied, directing the medical team to begin assessing the injured. “We’ll get you back on your feet in no time.”
As the medical personnel began their work, Tenora watched from the Valkyrie’s bridge, her heart swelling with pride for her crew. The Tianlong was safe, but they still had much to do.
“Commodore,” Lauren said, breaking Tenora’s thoughts, “we need to monitor the rift closely. If it fluctuates again, we could be in trouble.”
“Right,” Tenora agreed, her gaze fixed on the viewscreen. “We’ll need to keep an eye on the Gorn and any other threats that may emerge.”
As the shuttle team worked, Calum quickly assessed the situation. “We need to get the power back online. Where’s your engineering team, Commodore?”
“They’re down in engineering,” Toby replied, his expression resolute. “We can’t risk moving everyone until we stabilize the ship.”
“Understood. Let’s focus on stabilizing the environment first, and then we’ll get your engineering team up here,” Calum said, his tone authoritative.
As the crew worked, the tension began to ease. The energy of determination filled the air, a collective resolve to overcome the odds.
“Commodore, we’re stabilizing the injured,” Carson reported, checking on the medical team’s progress. “We should have them prepped for transport back to the Valkyrie shortly.”
“Excellent work, everyone,” Tenora said, pride swelling in her heart. “Let’s get them home.”
As the injured crew of the Tianlong were beamed aboard the Valkyrie, Tenora reflected on the day’s events. They had faced uncertainty and danger, but they had also found hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
With the crew of the Tianlong now safe, Tenora couldn’t help but feel gratitude. Together, they had navigated the chaos and emerged stronger, united in their commitment to each other and the ideals of Starfleet.
As the Valkyrie prepared to escort the Tianlong back to safety, Tenora looked out into the stars, ready for whatever challenges lay ahead. In the depths of the rift, they had found not only their comrades but also a renewed sense of purpose that would guide them on their journey through the cosmos.
