Mission:
VFY S6, E1: It Has Begun
Location: USS Tianlong, Various
Location USS Tianlong, Various
The corridors of the USS Tianlong were dimly lit, the flickering lights casting shadows on the walls as repairs were underway. Commodore Tenora Tal stepped cautiously through the ship, the hum of machinery and the sound of tools clattering in the background creating a symphony of recovery. She made her way to the engineering deck, eager to see how Commodore Toby Carlsson was faring after the ordeal he had just endured.
“Toby!” Tenora called out as she approached the chief engineering station, where Toby was overseeing the repairs. He looked up, his face a mixture of exhaustion and relief.
“Commodore Tal!” he exclaimed, a grin breaking through the fatigue. “It’s good to see you. I didn’t think we’d make it back in one piece.”
“Neither did I,” Tenora admitted, moving closer to inspect the work being done. “The rift was more unstable than we anticipated. How’s the ship holding up?”
“We’ve got power restored to most systems, but we’re still working on the warp drive,” Toby replied, wiping a sheen of sweat from his brow. “The damage was extensive, but we’ll get her back to full strength in no time.”
Tenora placed a hand on his shoulder, her expression softening. “You did it, Toby. You brought her home. That’s no small feat, especially after everything you and your crew went through.”
Toby chuckled, though there was a hint of sorrow in it. “I wish I could say it was all me. My crew showed incredible resilience out there. I just tried to keep us afloat.”
“You led them through a chaotic situation,” Tenora pointed out, her voice firm but encouraging. “Not everyone could have managed to navigate a rift like that and bring their ship back. You should be proud of yourself.”
“Proud, yes,” Toby said, leaning against the console. “But I can’t shake the feeling that we could have done something differently. We lost several Gorn vessels trying to escape.”
“Sometimes, the universe throws us into impossible situations,” Tenora replied. “You did what you could. What matters is that you and your crew are safe. We can’t save everyone, but we can learn from these experiences.”
Toby nodded, the weight of her words settling in. “I guess you’re right. It’s just hard to see the bigger picture when you’re in the middle of it all.”
“Believe me, I understand,” Tenora said, her eyes reflecting a shared understanding of leadership burdens. “But today, let’s focus on the victory. You’re back, and we’re all here to support you. We’ll get the Tianlong back to full operational status together.”
“Thanks, Tenora,” Toby said, a genuine smile returning to his face. “I appreciate it. I couldn’t have asked for a better ally during this whole ordeal.”
“Just doing my job,” Tenora replied with a chuckle. “Now, how about we get you a proper meal once everything is settled? You and your crew deserve a celebration.”
Toby raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk appearing. “Celebration? After what we just went through? I thought we’d be on the brig for disappearing without a trace!”
“Not on my watch,” she laughed. “You’ve earned every bit of gratitude we can muster. And besides, I think everyone could use a little morale boost after the chaos.”
“Alright, it’s a deal,” Toby said, his spirits visibly lifted. “But only if you promise to join us too. No way I’m holding a party without the woman who helped bring us all back.”
“You’ve got yourself a deal, Commodore,” Tenora said, her heart warmed by his camaraderie. “Now, let’s get this ship ready for her next mission.”
With renewed determination, they both turned back to the task at hand, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. The USS Tianlong would rise from the ashes of its ordeal, and together, they would ensure it was stronger than ever.
Location USS Tianlong Mess Hall
2 hours later…
The mess hall of the USS Valkyrie was filled with the comforting sounds of clinking utensils and low chatter as the crew gathered to unwind after a long and tumultuous day. Nicole Stanley sat at a table, her plate half-finished, lost in thought as she reflected on the events that had unfolded with the USS Tianlong. Her mind drifted to the chaos of the rift and the daunting task of bringing the ship back to safety.
“Hey, mind if I join you?” Calum Tate, the chief of security, approached with a warm smile, his tray in hand.
“Not at all,” Nicole replied, looking up. “I could use the company.”
Calum settled into the seat across from her, his demeanor relaxed. “I just wanted to say how impressed I was with your piloting skills during the rift. You handled everything like a pro.”
Nicole felt a flush of warmth at his words. “Thanks, Calum. I just did what I could. It was chaos in there, and I was just trying to keep us steady.”
“Steady? You were practically dancing with the controls,” he said, a hint of admiration in his voice. “You navigated us through some serious turbulence. Not everyone could have done that.”
She smiled, grateful for the acknowledgment. “I appreciate it, but let’s be honest, the ship was badly damaged. It wasn’t exactly my finest hour.”
“Maybe, but it wasn’t your fault,” Calum countered gently. “You did your best, and that counts for a lot. I think we all learned something from that experience.”
Nicole looked down at her plate, her thoughts swirling. “I guess so. It’s just hard to shake the feeling that I could have done more.”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself,” he urged. “We’re a team, and we all played our parts. Besides, you’re one of the best pilots I’ve ever worked with.”
Their eyes locked for a moment, and Nicole felt a spark of something she hadn’t expected. “Thanks, Calum. That means a lot coming from you.”
He chuckled softly, scratching the back of his neck. “I’m just speaking the truth. You’ve got this incredible ability to stay calm under pressure. It’s impressive.”
Nicole could feel her heart racing slightly, and she shifted in her seat, trying to ease the tension. “Well, I guess we all have our strengths. Yours is definitely in security.”
“True,” Calum replied, his gaze playful. “But I think I might need to take some flying lessons from you. Just in case we ever find ourselves in another rift.”
“Good luck with that,” she laughed, her eyes sparkling. “I’m not sure I’m ready for the responsibility of teaching you.”
“Hey, I can be a fast learner,” he teased, leaning closer. “Besides, who wouldn’t want to learn from the best?”
Nicole felt her cheeks heat up again, the camaraderie between them evolving into something more potent. “You really think I’m the best?”
“Absolutely,” he said, his tone sincere. “And I think there’s more to you than just your piloting skills. You’re a great leader, too.”
“Calum, I—” she began, but before she could finish, he interrupted.
“Let me finish,” he said, his expression earnest. “I know this might be unconventional, but I want you to know that I admire you—not just as a pilot but as a person. If you’re ever interested in grabbing a drink outside of the ship’s routine, I’d love to get to know you better.”
Nicole’s heart fluttered at his admission. “I’d like that. Really.”
“Great,” he said, a grin breaking across his face. “Let’s make it happen once we’re back on our feet. You know, after all this rift business settles down.”
“Deal,” she replied, feeling a rush of excitement at the prospect. “But just so you know, I still expect you to take those flying lessons.”
“Absolutely,” Calum laughed, and for the first time that day, Nicole felt the weight of the chaos lift off her shoulders.
As they continued their conversation, the chemistry between them blossomed, and the mess hall faded into the background. In that moment, amidst the uncertainties of space travel and the challenges they faced, Nicole realized that new beginnings could emerge from the most unpredictable situations. With Calum by her side, a new horizon awaited them both.
Location USS Tianlong Ten Forward Bar
3 hours later…
Three hours after their earlier conversation, the crew bar of the USS Valkyrie buzzed with energy, laughter, and the comforting clinks of glasses. Nicole Stanley leaned against the bar, nervously glancing at the entrance, her heart racing with anticipation. It was a far cry from the chaos of the rift, and now, she was ready to embrace this new chapter.
“Hey, Nicole!” Calum Tate called out as he stepped through the door, his presence lighting up the room. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and the casual elegance of his uniform accentuated his confident demeanor.
“Calum!” Nicole responded, her smile widening as he approached. “You made it!”
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he said, settling onto the stool next to her. “How’s the atmosphere treating you?”
“It’s lively! Just what I needed after all that craziness,” she replied, the warmth of his presence easing her nerves. “What about you?”
“Same here. I think we all deserve a break after today,” he said, glancing around the bar before focusing back on her. “So, what’s good here?”
“I’d recommend the synthale. It’s pretty popular, and the cheesy puffs are a must-try,” Nicole suggested, her excitement bubbling over.
“Synthale it is,” he chuckled, ordering their drinks. “I have to admit, I’ve been thinking about our earlier conversation.”
“Oh?” Nicole raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “What about it?”
“I just wanted to say that you really impressed me during the rift. The way you kept calm and piloted us through was nothing short of remarkable,” Calum said, his tone sincere.
Nicole felt her cheeks warm at the compliment. “Thanks, but I was just doing what I had to do. We all played our parts.”
“True, but you played yours brilliantly,” he insisted, leaning closer, his eyes sparkling. “You have this way of making the impossible seem possible.”
She smiled, feeling a rush of warmth at his words. “I appreciate that, Calum. It means a lot coming from you.”
“Good,” he said, taking a sip of his drink. “You know, I think we make a pretty good team.”
“I agree,” Nicole replied, her heart fluttering. “I’m really glad you’re on this ship.”
“Me too,” Calum said, his gaze steady. “I’ve enjoyed getting to know you better.”
Their new drinks arrived, and they clinked their glasses together, the sound echoing their newfound connection. As they settled into conversation, the chemistry between them grew undeniable, punctuated by laughter and shared stories.
“So, about those karaoke rumors…” Nicole began, a teasing glint in her eye.
Calum laughed, shaking his head. “You have to promise not to judge me too harshly when you hear me sing.”
“I don’t know, I might have to challenge you to a duet,” she teased, leaning in closer.
“Challenge accepted,” he replied, his voice dipping low, sending a shiver down her spine. “But only if you promise to sing a solo first.”
“Deal,” Nicole said, her heart racing as they locked eyes. “But I warn you, I’m not as good as I look.”
“Honestly, I find that hard to believe,” Calum said, a playful smirk on his lips. “You seem to excel at everything you do.”
“Flattery will get you everywhere,” Nicole replied, her tone light as she fought the blush creeping up her cheeks.
“Good to know,” he said, leaning closer, the space between them shrinking. “I just want you to know that I admire your courage and determination. It’s inspiring.”
“Calum, I—” she began, but he gently interrupted.
“How about we plan a real outing after we return to normal operations? Maybe a trip to the holodeck for some fun?”
“I’d love that! Just promise me, not to make it all about our mission to the rift,” she joked, her laughter ringing out.
“Only if you promise to bring your A-game,” Calum shot back, his eyes dancing with mischief. He is redirecting the conversation towards the karaoke that they're better ready to do. He was trying to make light-hearted of her. In his eyes he was happy to go on an official date and not talk about their mission they went through.
Their laughter faded into a comfortable silence, the moment stretching between them. Nicole could feel the chemistry crackling in the air, an undeniable connection that thrummed beneath the surface.
“Hey, Nicole,” Calum said softly, breaking the silence. “I just want you to know that I’m really glad we’re here together.”
“Me too, Calum,” she replied, her heart racing. “I can’t wait to see where this goes.”
As the night wore on, they shared stories, laughter, and more than a few lingering glances. With every passing minute, the bond between them grew stronger, weaving a tapestry of shared experiences and unspoken promises.
“I think this might be the best night I’ve had in a long time,” Nicole said, her voice softening.
“Yeah, it really is,” Calum agreed, his gaze locking onto hers. “Here’s to more nights like this, together.”
“Together,” she echoed, her heart swelling with hope and excitement for what lay ahead. It was reassuring to know that he was interested in getting to know her better.
In that moment, surrounded by the warmth of the bar and the comfort of each other’s presence, Nicole realized that this was just the beginning of an incredible journey—one filled with laughter, adventure, and perhaps a little romance.
“Okay, Calum, I think it’s time we put those karaoke rumors to the test,” she declared, pointing toward the small stage at the far end of the bar where a microphone awaited.
He raised an eyebrow, a mix of excitement and mock apprehension. “You mean to tell me you want me to sing in front of all these people?”
“Absolutely! It’s the perfect way to break the ice and let loose after everything,” Nicole encouraged, her enthusiasm contagious. “Besides, we made a deal, remember? You promised to sing with me.”
“Right, the duet challenge,” he said, a smile creeping onto his face. “Alright, how about a classic? Something we can both butcher together.”
“Perfect! ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey,” Nicole suggested, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “It’s a crowd favorite!”
Calum laughed, shaking his head. “You’re killing me, but I’m in. Let’s show everyone just how bad we can be.”
As they made their way to the stage, the crowd cheered, and Nicole felt a rush of adrenaline. “Alright, everyone, prepare yourselves!” she called out, gripping the microphone tightly.
Calum took his place beside her, and as the music started, they exchanged uncertain smiles. The moment they began singing, laughter erupted from the audience; their voices were far from perfect, but the joy of the moment was undeniable.
“Just a small-town girl, livin’ in a lonely world…” Nicole belted out, her voice a little shaky but full of spirit.
“Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit!” Calum chimed in, his tone exaggerated, causing the crowd to erupt in laughter.
As they continued, they couldn’t help but steal glances at each other, their laughter blending with the lyrics. With each chorus, they grew more confident, and the audience’s cheers fueled their performance.
When the song finally ended, the bar erupted in applause, and Nicole and Calum took a dramatic bow, both of them breathless and grinning from ear to ear.
“See? That wasn’t so bad!” Nicole exclaimed, her cheeks flushed with excitement. “We should make this a regular thing.”
“Regular? You mean we should turn this into a weekly competition?” Calum teased, leaning closer. “I think I’m up for the challenge.”
“Oh, you’re on! But I warn you, I’m a fierce competitor,” Nicole said, her eyes gleaming with mischief.
“I look forward to it,” he replied, his gaze lingering on hers, the connection between them palpable. “You know, that was surprisingly fun. I didn’t expect to enjoy karaoke this much.”
“Me neither! I guess we make a pretty good team,” Nicole said, her heart fluttering. “And you weren’t half bad up there.”
“Coming from you, that means a lot,” Calum replied, his voice low and sincere. “I think we should celebrate our newfound talents.”
“How about a round of drinks?” Nicole suggested, her smile brightening. “We can toast to our karaoke success.”
“Sounds like a plan,” he agreed, motioning for the bartender. “And maybe we could also plan our next outing. I mean, I think we still owe each other a date on the holodeck.”
“Yes! I’d love that,” Nicole said, her excitement bubbling up again. “Any ideas on what we should do?”
“I was thinking we could do something adventurous—like a survival training scenario,” Calum suggested, a glint of mischief in his eyes. “You know, to see if we can survive together.”
“Survival training? You’re really trying to test me, aren’t you?” she laughed, shaking her head. “Alright, challenge accepted. But don’t be surprised if I end up saving you.”
“Please, I have no doubt you would,” he said, leaning closer, his voice teasing. “But just remember, if I get stuck up a tree, I might need more than just a rescue. I might need a karaoke performance to calm my nerves.”
“Deal! I’ll sing you a song to get you down,” Nicole replied, her heart racing at the playful banter. “But you have to promise to catch me if I fall.”
“Always,” Calum said, his gaze steady and sincere. Their eyes locked, and for a moment, the world around them faded away.
As the bartender brought their drinks, Nicole felt a warmth spreading through her. “Here’s to us,” she said, raising her glass.
“To us!” Calum echoed, clinking his glass against hers. “And to many more adventures together.”
They shared a smile, the chemistry between them undeniable, and as the night wore on, it felt like the beginning of something beautiful. With shared laughter, playful banter, and plans for the future, Nicole realized that this connection was more than just a fleeting moment—it was a spark that would lead to a vibrant journey together. The scene fades away as a story ends.
