VFY S1, E6: The Drax Empire

Location: Port Royale Station, Shuttle Bay 7
Chief Petty Officer Wilson stood at the side of Shuttlebay 7’s flight deck watching as his deck crew went about their work. The third of three Galaxy-class starships had dropped off the remaining fighters, pilots and support personnel for the 714th Tactical Aerospace Group. That meant that they were now fully staffed and equipped. Lieutenant Commander Mitchell had given the go ahead for the first Combat Air Patrol to being at 0600 the following morning. There was still a lot of work to be done between then and now.
Breaking out of his revere, Hank turned and found Lieutenant Jones, in his dress uniform, walking towards him. Hank had never been good at concealing his loathing of Jones ever since the Lieutenant had tried to prosecute Xander following a mishap that turned out to be the result of an unforeseeable technical fault. “What the hell do you want?”
“I’d watch that tone of yours if I were you, Henry. You could find yourself up on charges very quickly if you keep it up.” Sebastian replied coolly.
It was not the first time the English Lieutenant had threatened Hank in that manner but by now it was water off a duck’s back. Sebastian was no doubt expecting a sarcastic reply and Hank did not like to disappoint. “Oh, I’m so sorry my lord,” he added a curtsey for effect. “How may I be of assistance?”
“Where’s Alexander?” Jones asked, deciding not to rise to the Chief’s bait. He couldn’t understand why Wilson continued to hold a grudge over that case. Sebastian had just been doing his job and Alexander understood that; he’d never shown any sign of anger towards him in the years since.
“He’s out there,” Wilson paused and motioned towards the forcefield that that held back the vacuum of space, “somewhere”.
Sebastian let out a sigh. “Do you have any idea when he’s due to get back?”
“Not a clue.” While that was true, Wilson had a feeling that the CAG wouldn’t be back for a few hours yet. He was no fan of formal functions, social functions or the dress uniform. If he knew Xander, and he did, then the CAG would be avoiding the Commodore’s promotion ceremony like the plague and doing it under the guise of his duties.
Sebastian knew Xander well enough that he had already drawn the same conclusion but part of him thought that he would’ve made an exception for Martinez. Apparently, he was wrong. It was disappointing but not surprising. “Well when he gets back, tell him I was looking for him.”
“Yeah, I’m not your messenger.” With that Wilson walked off to continue his duties.
Sebastian was left standing there, seething silently. He let out another sigh and started to make his way through the station to the Cargo Bay that had been designated for the ceremony. Only a few hours ago Commander Sanchez had dropped the bombshell that he would be keeping an eye on Ambassador Gumar.
A night spent socialising with the Cardassian envoy to the station while trying to prevent the man from starting any diplomatic incidents didn’t seem like fun and he had been hoping that Alexander would provide some friendly company but sadly it wasn’t to be. Sebastian steeled himself for the night that lay ahead of him.
