Act 2: A New Day

Mission: VFY S1, E6: The Drax Empire
Location: Port Royale, Diplomatic Offices

arah walked into the diplomatic office aboard Port Royale, she was still trying to cope with the sudden realization. She was now separated, and instead of getting time off. Her good old friend Domingo, had put her to work. For a nice guy with a charming smile, he really knew how to work his people hard. She was slightly annoyed at him for that. But she understood the stakes, and why he needed her. She looked around the room, and noticed a new face. "You must be Lieutenant Jones." Sarah said with a big smile on her face.

Jones turned to face the Chief Diplomatic Officer and offered a friendly smile. "Yes ma'am." He extended a hand. "Lieutenant Sebastian Jones."

"We will be meeting the new Drax Ambassador today in Airlock 5, are you ready?" She asked, seeing how on the feet he was. In their line of work, a diplomat could be called in at a moments notice. And she needed to see if she needed to bring Sebastian up to speed.

Sebastian wasn't familiar with the Drax but he was confident that he'd be able to get up to speed quickly enough. "I don't know much about the Drax," he admitted. "If we have time, I can scan the Federation database and familiarise myself. If not, I can wing it and do my research once our meeting is over."

"Not much is known, but I hope to change that, its why we are meeting Ambassador Vieers at Airlock 5. I want to meet her and her daughter, get our first impressions. Very little is known about the Drax. The Federation Council was surprised they accepted our offer to join Port Royale."

His lack of knowledge regarding the Drax now made sense. "Well we're out here to seek out new life and new civilisations. Who'd have thought that admits all the tensions out here that we'll get the chance to work and develop deeper diplomatic relations with the Drax and learn more about them and their history. This is the kind of opportunity that Diplomatic Officers dream of."

"We will need to make the Ambassador feel at home, I took the liberty of preparing her credentials, and want to escort her to her quarters. So we can get a little time to meet her, and hopefully learn a little about the Drax." Sarah said, this was the type of distraction she needed from her personal life.

Sebastian nodded in agreement. "I understand there's to be a formal ceremony for Commodore Martinez' promotion to Rear Admiral. We should extend an invite to that. It would be a good chance for her to meet the Commodore and the stations senior officers."

"Good thinking. We will make reference to it, when we meet up with her." Sarah said, liking Sebastian's idea of inviting her to Domingo's promotion ceremony. This should win over some points for the Federation.

The Englishman nodded. It seemed like the Commodore's promotion ceremony was the perfect opportunity to do some diplomatic glad-handing, which led him to his next question. "Has an invitation been extended to Ambassador Gumar?" Cardassia's envoy on the station had arrived the previous day and if they were to invite the Drax Ambassador, it seemed only fitting that the Cardassian Ambassador be invited too. Indeed, if they didn't it was sure to ruffle the Cardassian's feathers.

"Not a bad idea, but not sure if he will attend. The ceremony is not about him or his people, but if you want to reach out to him, and ask him. I would not object to that." Sarah said, leaving that decision on him. She had her hands full with prepping the new Drax Ambassador.

Sebastian hadn't had a chance to meet Ambassador Gumar so he couldn't speculate on the likelihood his is accepting. "Whether he attends or not isn't the issue. The Cardassians are a proud people. If we extend an invitation to the Drax Ambassador and not Gumar then it'll be seen as a snub and will almost certainly set us back in our dealings with him. And while this ceremony isn't about either of our Ambassadors or their people, I think it provides us the perfect opportunity to do a little diplomatic glad-handing while celebrating Commodore Martinez' promotion."

Sarah smiled at his comment, he gets it. She liked that. "Very true Lieutenant. So make sure to invite the good Ambassador, to the party." Sarah said, as she walked over to her desk for a moment. Then grabbed a data pad from the desk. "We have a busy day ahead of us, a lot of ambassadors checking in today. I have divided all the work between us, make sure they all get an invite." Sarah said as she handed him the pad.

"What time is the new Drax Ambassador due to arrive?" Sebastian asked as he glanced through the contents of the PADD.

"Her flight is just arriving, we should head down to meet her." Sarah said, as she motioned for him to join her.
