Alex walked into Operations, unfamiliar with the normal bustle of the daily routine aboard a starbase. He'd been aboard starships his entire career. He stopped a crewman who was working on a console.
"Can you tell me where the CO's office is? " he asked.
The crewman pointed to the door on the left side of Ops.
"Right there, sir. Admiral Martinez is in. Just reporting aboard? " he asked.
"That obvious, huh? Yes, I just arrived half an hour ago. Thank you, Crewman. " he said, smiling and going to the door. He rang the chime.
"Enter," called out Domingo over the intercom. He was feeling a little tired from all the interviews. He barely had arrived on the station, and now was already swamped with meetings. He took a deep breath as he waited for the new Marine Commander to arrive in his office.
Alex walked into the office and stood at attention in front of the Admiral's desk. He wasn't nervous. He'd been around brass before, and found most of those he'd interacted with to be easy to be around, provided the proper decorum was observed.
"Second Lieutenant Alexander Beck, Starfleet Marine Corps, reporting to the Admiral as ordered, sir. " he said.
"At ease Lieutenant, take a seat please." Domingo said.
Alexander sat. "I don't mean to sound too forward, sir, but what can I expect from this place? This is my first starbase assignment. " he said.
"This station is barely operational, and there is a lot of opportunity for a Marine like you to succeed in a place like this!" Domingo started off, paused for a moment, trying to think how best to say this. "I have a specific assignment for you, see this through and I can change that brass bar for a silver one on your uniform." Domingo said, trying to get the marines full attention. In a way this was a test. How hungry was he to prove himself, and be on the fast track.
Most of Domingo's life he was on the fast track. One of the youngest Admiral's serving in Starfleet. He proved how hungry he was, and now he had his own task force. He needed to see if this Marine had his determination and will.
"Where do you need us, sir? " Alex asked. While he would gladly welcome a quick promotion, he was here to do a job, and there wouldn't be a Marine detachment here unless Starfleet thought it was necessary. He was a Marine, and he was here to work.
Domingo brought up holographic profile of Alexander Beck, "I see you have elite training with the Archangels, and before you go around denying it.." Domingo started to say, he showed a picture of his unit, and him in it. "I am assembling a special incursion unit, you never know when special forces will be needed. I want you to lead that small 20 marine unit. Right now, I want you to put them through some simulated combat training against the Dominion Forces." Suggested Domingo, waiting to see how Alexander responded.
Alex grinned wolfishly. He liked how this man thought.
"It's what I'm best at, sir. " he said.
"Good, my first officer will be judging your performance. And when he feels you are ready, I will have a special assignment for you. But at the moment, I want you to go through this list, and narrow it down to 18." Domingo said, as he handed him a data pad. From his chair at the desk. "I have narrowed it down to 36, you will have the fun task of shrinking it down more. I wanted you to decide, who you can work well with. This team will be family, you all will see a lot of action. Trust me on that."
Duncan took the data pad.
"I'll get right on this, sir. Can I have use of a holodeck? Once I've narrowed down the list I want to run them through jump school. It's good for building unit cohesion. " said Duncan.
"Of course, the marines have several combat simulations holodecks, reserved just for tactical operations. Please utilize them. I am going to need your team operational, and ready to go, at a moments notice." Said Domingo.
"I'll have them ready, sir. " said Duncan. He stood. It was time to get to work.
"By your leave, Admiral? " he asked.
"Dismissed, and good luck Lieutenant." Domingo said, with a big grin on his face. He had the potential to be a great leader, now he was given the opportunity.
