Picking up her PaDD Summer checked the name of her first evaluation of the day, stepping out of her office with a polite smile. “Commander Vox, please come on through.”
Dee entered the Counsellor's office. "Good morning, Counsellor."
“Good Morning” Summer smiled warmly as the door closed behind her. “Please feel free to call me Summer, it saves forever batting titles around.”
"Oh, I certainly agree with you on that one, Summer. I'm Deezell, but most people either call me Dee or Vox. I will leave that decision to you. May I take a seat? Your chairs look very comfortable." Dee asked.
“Of course Dee” Summer nodded. “Make yourself at home, I believe in the creature comforts.” She took a seat. “Tell me all about you.”
"Well, where should I start? My name is Deezell Vox, the 6th host to Vox. My birth name is Deezell Timurs. I'm married to my darling husband, Jaxon Ruveer, so if I wasn't joined with Vox I would be Deezell Ruveer. I've had a love of all things engineering since I was a little girl, back on Trill where I grew up in the shadows of the Teneran mountains. Jumping forward a few years, I joined Starfleet, became the 6th host to Vox without any training whatsoever, assigned to Starbase 400 moving up from basic engineer to eventually becoming the chief engineer and today after a promotion and transfer, I'm the Director of Research and Development for Valhalla Fleet Yards with the command of Teneran Station and USS Bushido. I'd say that was a concise version"
“Quite concise” Summer smiled. “So you never received any kind of preparation or anything for your joining with Vox? That seems unusual given that joinings are so heavily regulated on Trill.”
" I'm what's known as an Emergency Joined Trill. It's basically when the host of a symbiont dies off world and the symbiont is returned to Trill. Normally that all works out and a new host, with the training etc. is selected. In unfortunate circumstances where, en route back to Trill, the symbiont's health is at risk, joining is urgent and if there is only one Trill on-board, regardless of any training, that's the new host. "
Summer nodded. “At least you’re coping with your joining, it must be a very enriching experience with all those lifetimes of experience?”
"It is, but it can be confusing sometimes. I remember back when I was joined, the first few weeks or so. I was sometimes unsure if I was male or female when I awoke in the morning, until I peered under the duvet." Dee smirked. "I have since had two children, so there isn't any doubt now," she added.
Summer grinned at that one. “It’s good to know that you’ve overcome those early problems. How does it feel to know that in the event of anything happening to you, your life experience would carry on with another Trill?”
"It's kind of an odd feeling, really, knowing someone will have all my memories, experiences, and hopefully will use them to guide themselves in their joined life."
“I’ve no doubt it is”, Summer smiled. “You still have your whole life ahead of you; let’s hope it’s filled with nothing but good experiences.”
"We all hope for that, but we both know life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s the mix of good and bad experiences that shapes our lives and the people we become. I’ve had some difficult experiences in my past, some my husband knows nothing about. I just hope one of them in particular doesn’t come back to haunt me. Seeing him again a few months before I met my husband was bad enough."
“Oh? Tell me about it if you can.” Summer offered a curious yet kind glance.
"My previous host, Raekwon, who was a dealer in antiques and art, got himself involved with a notorious group of smugglers/mercenaries, known as The Crimson Parallax. Their leader was a man by the name of Jurlan Topsinenggi with a wrap sheet longer than your arm and someone who, even Odo, was never able to catch and put away. Raekwon promised Jurlan he would help him whenever needed. A few months before I met my partner, the Red Kite, the ship of the Vleeb Brotherhood, showed up at Starbase 400, and they had come for one thing and one thing only... me. Well, they came for Raekwon, but he had died some time before. They didn't know this so Jurlan got a surprise when he met me. "
“I can only imagine that must have been pretty unsettling for you?” Summer asked. “I’d imagine it’s a hazard for joined Trills.”
"Unsettling doesn't cover it. I had to do things," she shuddered, "I didn't really want to do but had no real choice. Backed into a corner so to speak. I don't like thinking about it. Makes me feel dirty."
Summer nodded. “Far be it from me to make you delve into it right now, but should you need to talk about it in the future please come and see me.”
"Of course. Not my finest moments that's for sure but it got me out of the situation in one piece. I heard a rumour recently that Jurlan is dead, but the gang still exists under new leadership and if that means his 1st took over, then we all need to stay well clear of them. His 1st only stayed in line because of Jurlan so what he will do now he's in charge is scary to contemplate. "
Summer nodded. “Well if you do have any further problems then I’m sure station security will be only too willing to help.”
"I'm sure they will. I will eventually have to talk about what happened, preferably before my husband is told about it before I have the time and , more importantly, the courage to do it. "
“Telling a partner should be a little easier, but it depends on how you think your husband will take it.” Summer offered. “Is he an understanding man?”
" He is. It's I'm worried he might see me in a different light. "
“If he loves you, nothing will change that.” Summer added with a caring smile. “I wish I had someone who cared for me.”
"Yeah, you're probably right. You will find someone. I wasn't sure once and I was wrong about it. "
Summer nodded. “I never give up hope.” She smiled.
" That's the spirit. The universe is full of mysteries, wonders and endless possibilities so there is always hope."
Summer nodded. “If you do decide to tell your partner, you could do so in my office? Then I can be on hand if there’s any problems.”
"Perhaps. I'm hopeful he won't judge me too harshly. Raekwon made a promise to Jurlan that he would help him out if he could. I thought that helping him fix his ship would be sufficient but I was so wrong. He basically entrapped me on his ship and the used me to get a deal with a rival gang by telling their leader they could have "fun" with me if he got better terms."
Summer shook her head. “That’s terrible. You had the right to defend yourself under those circumstances.”
"I was a young Ensign, still unsure of myself and had been recently joined to Vox under exceptional circumstances. I was trapped on a ship surrounded by very dangerous men. I had to submit to the situation. Jurlan got better terms and the leader of the rival gang, got some fun. Still makes me feel sick to this day."
“I’ve no doubt it does, but you had to do what you did it was self defence.” Summer added. “Would you like to change the subject?”
" Yes, might be a good idea."
Summer nodded. “Then that’s what we’ll do. Is there anything else you’d like to focus on?”
"I don't really know. Is there anything you need to go through?"
“I don’t think so.” Summer smiled warmly. “I’m happy with your evaluation.”
" Sounds good. I have enjoyed our chat, and I have to admit I do feel better about a lot of things."
The scene fades. Deezell returned to her office, whilst Summer moved on to their next appointment.
