379 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: S9, E2: Deals Made In Shadows
Location: Deezell's Office - Starbase Taneran.
Timeline: Current

"You asked to see me, ma'am," Nadin said as he approached Deezell's desk.

"I did. I need a bit of a favour from you and your warp core specialist team." Deezell replied. She took a sip of her coffee.
"I need to improve the warp efficiency and capabilities of the USS Bushido"

He motioned for a seat; she nodded for him to take one. "What exactly are you looking for, and am I at liberty to ask as to the whys and wherefores?"

"As much as I love the Sabre-class starship, the old Bushido is in dire need of a refit. But, considering our priorities, we can't do the whole job in one go, like we normally would. So, I would like to do it over time, in bite-sized chunks. One system at a time, but ensuring that, should she need to go on a mission, she can be ready to leave."

"I see, so basically a patchwork job? It's an old Earth expression I have picked up. A friend of mine in engineering restores vintage Earth automobiles and tells me that when people did that back in the 21st century, before they had sufficient money to do a full restoration, they would patch up where they could with welding or something called filler. Not that I am suggesting the same for the Bushido, but I would be improving one piece at a time rather than the normal refit process. "

"You have some interesting friends, Nadin, and yes, that is exactly what I meant. Best to start with things that clearly need replacing and repairing."

"Lieutenant Richards is a quirky individual, ma'am. I think you'd like him. He's a superb engineer, though, very methodical. I will get him on the team to patch up the Bushido."

"You will have to introduce me to him sometime. Hmmm, quirky, you say. Is he the man with the dyed blue streak in his black hair?" Dee enquired.

"You have seen him around, then. I asked him about that, and he answered that 'it looked cool'. The jury is still out on that one, I think." Nadin smirked.

"Quite. I will let you get on with the task at hand. Dismissed." Dee replied.

"Yes, ma'am," Nadin replied, turning and then leaving her office.
